AHRQ Web-conference to Explore Health IT's Role in Caring for Elderly, Chronically Ill

On Tuesday, June 21, 2011, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., E.S.T., AHRQ's National Resource Center for Health IT (NRC) will host a free Web-based teleconference on:Medication Management Using Health IT for the Care of Elderly Patients.  During this 90-minute conference, participants can watch and listen as three presenters share their experiences, lessons learned, and insights into the potential of how various health information technology applications lend themselves to improving the quality and outcomes of treating elderly, chronic pain, and otherwise chronically ill patients.  The presenters will be:

James Fricton, DDS, MS, a Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, School of Medicine and School of Public Health, and a Fellow at the Institute for Health Informatics at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Fricton has over thirty years of experience in patient care, research, and teaching in chronic pain and the use of the impact of health information technology and clinical decision support on improving safety, quality, and cost effectiveness of health care and consumer health.  He has developed a biobehavioral framework for personalized care of chronic pain conditions and has integrated this pain research with studies of health information technology focusing on the use of electronic health records, personal health records, and clinical decision support to improve health care quality and outcomes Dr. Fricton will present findings from a randomized clinical trial (RCT) of clinical decision support (CDS) that integrates electronic dental, medical, and personal health records (EDR, EMR, and PHRs). The study sought to demonstrate the efficacy of implementing two different clinical decision support strategies that provided personalized recommendations to the health care provider and compared them to usual care without CDS.  Dr. Friction will also discuss future areas where tools are needed to engage consumers and providers in using health information technologies.

Helene Kopal, MPA/MPH, the divisional director at Primary Care Development Corporation oversees projects focused on introducing and sustaining clinical, technology, and process improvements in community health care settings. She is currently the Principal Investigator on an AHRQ-funded study evaluating the role of enhanced electronic medical records on clinical practice in the management of hypertension in a community health care center.   Ms. Kopal will present Evaluation of a CDS and EMR-Linked Registry to Improve Management of Hypertension in a Community Health Center which is an evaluation of whether EMR-embedded clinical decision support as part of a multi-faceted quality improvement initiative contributes to improved hypertension control in a community health center. The study also includes an analysis of facilitators and barriers to provider acceptance of clinical decision support, and an analysis of relevant implementation factors.

Randall Cebul, MD, a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine and Director of the CWRU-MetroHealth System Center for Health Care Research and Policy. His work focuses on clinical research methods, quality of care measurement, and clinical decision support for chronic conditions and primary care. Dr. Cebul will present results from a large learning collaborative for quality improvement.
