OpenMRS is committed to building a diverse, vibrant, and robust community where knowledge and experience is expanded through practical opportunities. The OpenMRS Fellowship Program aims to provide opportunities for mid- to senior-level technical project managers, developers, and quality assurance specialists to advance their skill set and become general OpenMRS jedis and/or gurus in specific technical areas.

Current Fellow and Fellowship Mentor Opportunities We are currently looking for 3-4 talented individuals interested in serving as Fellows and/or Fellowship Mentors in the following areas:
  • Development
  • Technical Project/Product Management
  • Quality Assurance (Management or Engineering)

We have identified three projects that serve as ideal opportunities for OpenMRS Fellows and Fellowship Mentors:

  • COVID-19 Integration Tools
  • Analytics Engine/Indicator Reporting
  • FHIR Messaging

These fellowships are 10-11 months long, beginning in August/September 2020.

Fellows can be any mid-to senior- level technical project/product manager, developer, quality assurance specialist, or subject matter expert who is interested in expanding their knowledge and skills.

We're specifically interested in candidates with at least:

  • 2-4 years of experience in software development, project or product management, quality assurance, or subject matter expertise (i.e: terminology, standards, microfrontends, security, DevOps, etc)
  • Has some experience with processes, tools, and technologies used by the OpenMRS community
  • Demonstrates initiative to identify different problems and proposes effective solutions for those problems
  • Dedication to the OpenMRS mission, vision, and values
  • Open to exploring and applying open source principles
  • Able to work independently and as a part of a team
  • Good communication skills

Fellowship Mentors have at least 4-5 years experience in one or more areas of expertise, such as: project/product management, development, quality assurance, business analysis, etc. We are open to working with Fellowship Mentors unfamiliar with OpenMRS who can bring a unique skill set to our community (i.e: FHIR, React, technical writing, etc).

Fellowship Mentors will benefit from having experience:

  • Collaborating with the OpenMRS community (or other open source project)
  • Identifying learning opportunities
  • Transferring knowledge and skills to a less experienced person
  • Assessing learning or professional growth

Note that Fellows with advanced skills and/or experience in a specific area are eligible to serve as Fellowship Mentors. Fellowship Mentors may be eligible to receive a stipend.

How to apply

To apply, Fellow and Fellowship Mentor candidates can complete the Fellowship Program Application 1 and submit a cover letter and CV. The cover letter should include:

  • type of fellowship you are applying for (Development, TPM, QA, SME, etc)
  • project(s) that you are interested in,
  • experience working on open source projects,
  • your technical experience,
  • professional development goals, and
  • any other information that you believe is relevant.

Applications will be reviewed on the 20th of each month on an ongoing basis until all fellowship openings are filled.
