HealthXL, a Health IT start-up incubator founded by IBM, Novartis,
Cleveland Clinic, Silicon Valley Bank, Reckitt Benckiser and Glaxo, held
the Latin American edition of the HealthXL Awards at Tofiq House, Sao
Paulo, Brazil.
The awards honor the leading global proponents of Health IT innovations
and this year Magdala de Araújo Novaes was named as the Most Influential
Person in Digital Health in Latin America.
Professor Novaes, who will travel to the final event to be held on May 31
in Ireland, is a specialist in informatics and is currently working as a
coordinator at the Telehealth Nucleus (NUTES) at the Universidad Federal
de Pernambuco. She has also worked for several different Brazilian
telemedicine projects.
The jurors, Lisa Suenen, representing of Venture Valkyrie Consulting LCC;
Julie Papanek, representing Healthcare Venture Capital; and Juan Pablo
Mas, Vice-president of Lightstone Ventures, were tasked with choosing 12
candidates from nominations by professionals in the sector.
Also announced at the event was the Brazil Founders Award which this year
went to Hernan Kazah of Kaszek Ventures for "Best Investor."
According to the mentors at HealthXL Latin America, organized by HealthXL
Global, the event is an opportunity to get to know and gather the regional
players who are transforming medical care through technology.
Participants supporting the HealthXL Awards included: Mariano Groiso,
Health Industry Leader for Latin America at IBM; Isabel Aparicio,
Community Manager at HealthXL; and Vitor Asseituno, founder of Empreender
Saúde. Martin Kelly, a partner at IBM's Venture Capital Group, coordinated
the initiative from Ireland.
Speaking about the Latin American edition to E-Health Reporter Latin
America, Groiso said: "The HealthXL Awards are very important because they
highlight the increasingly important role that the world of technology,
health and investment is playing in the region, in addition to corporate
sponsorship of innovative ideas with Start Ups."
