Subject: IHTSDO CoP: IHTSDO/WHO SNOMED CT to ICD-10 Cross-Map Technology Preview Release

The International Health Terminology Standards Development Organisation (IHTSDO) and the World Health Organization are pleased to announce that a Technology Preview of SNOMED CT to ICD-10 cross maps is now available.

The Maps have been constructed using the July 2010 version of SNOMED CT, published by the IHTSDO, as the source; and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Tenth Revision (© World Health Organization 1994) ICD 10 second edition (2008), published and maintained by the World Health Organization, as the target. The cross-maps from SNOMED CT to ICD 10 have been created to support the epidemiological, statistical and administrative reporting of IHTSDO Member countries and WHO Collaborating Centres.

The priority list of concepts from three source SNOMED CT domains has been assembled based on frequency of SNOMED CT concept use in clinical data repositories in IHTSDO Member countries. The maps have been produced using the technical processes, methodologies and Quality Assurance procedures developed by the IHTSDO Mapping Special Interest group as part of its collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). As well as extensive internal quality assurance and advice from experts, an independent validation exercise has been undertaken which resulted in minor changes to the methodology and updates to the maps.

It should be noted that this Technology Preview release builds further on the preview publication in September 2010 of cross maps from SNOMED CT to ICD-10.

The IHTSDO Mapping Service will be updating the source of these maps to align with the January 2013 release of SNOMED CT in readiness for release as a baseline in January 2013. IHTSDO will also be considering an update to the target WHO ICD-10 January 2010 edition. We therefore would welcome your feedback and comments should be received by 1st October 2012 in order to apply any necessary changes – Kathy Giannangelo, kgi@ihtsdo.org, with further details in the Release notes. The Release notes and Mapping SNOMED CT to ICD 10 Technical Specifications are available at http://www.ihtsdo.org/develop/mapping/icd10/.

The Technology Preview may be downloaded by any IHTSDO Member organisation, affiliate or interested party who is registered through the SNOMED CT Affiliate License Service Application (SALSA)* https://www.ihtsdoregistration.nss.cfh.nhs.uk/salsa/user/guest/group/0/pack/4/subpack/56/releases
