1. News from the 2011 IMIA General Assembly

The 2011 IMIA General Assembly was held on Sunday, 28 August in Oslo, Norway. Among news highlights are:

  • three new IMIA Member Societies were admitted, specifically the eHealth Association of Pakistan (eHAP) (http://www.ehap.net.pk), the Health Informatics Society of Sri Lanka (HISSL) (http://www.hissl.org) and the Peruvian Association of Biomedical Informatics (Asociación Peruana de Informática Biomédica) (http://www.apib.pe/)
  • two new Academic institutional members were accepted, the National Institutes of Health (NIHI), Canada (replacing University of Waterloo) and the University of Surrey, Department of Health Care Management and Policy, UK.
  • several organisations (Member Societies and Institutional Members) had their membership of IMIA ended, due to non-payment of fees, as per IMIA Statutes.
  • IMIA now has 56 Member Societies, 45 Academic and 7 Corporate Institutional Members, and Corresponding Members in an additional 35 countries.
  • following the submission of two high quality bids, after presentations from the two bid teams, the GA voted to hold Medinfo2015 in Sao Paolo, Brasil in late August 2015. Bids for Medinfo2017 will open in early 2012, and a decision be made at the 2012 GA meeting. Thereafter, the process will be every two years.
  • a modest rise in IMIA membership fees was approved, and the details will be communicated to all members, to be implemented from January 2012. In order to avoid another lengthy interval between rises, IMIA will aim to review membership fees every two years (although this does not mean there will be increases this frequently, as the review decision may be to hold fees).
  • a new access model and related business plan for the IMIA Yearbook will be developed in the coming year, to be presented at the 2012 General Assembly meeting
  • a new 'Working Group of the Year' award will be instituted, commencing at the 2012 GA meeting. Performance criteria for WGs have been developed, to measure activity and to ensure that WGs continue to represent IMIA as the foci for scientific activity.

New IMIA Board members were approved, specifically:

  • Lincoln de Assis Moura Jr as President-elect (2011-13) and President from 2013-15;
  • Lyn Hanmer as Secretary for a second term (2012-15);
  • Sabine Koch as Treasurer (2012-15);
  • Michio Kimura as VP Membership (2012-15);
  • Chris Lehmann as VP Services (2012-15).

IMIA Honorary Fellowship was awarded to Ed Hammond.

News items with further details will be posted on the IMIA News website in the coming weeks - http://imianews.wordpress.com

2. IMIA Honorary Fellowship Awarded to Ed Hammond

At the 2011 IMIA GA, Ed Hammond was made an IMIA Honorary Fellow in recognition of his being an ambassador for the field of health and medical informatics for over 40 years.  In particular through AMIA’s International Committee, Dr. Hammond has worked internationally throughout the Asia-Pacific region, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Africa spearheading numerous efforts to advance the field of medical informatics. He has worked tirelessly to advance the development of electronic health records, health data standards, and integrate medical informatics into the domains of biomedical research and clinical care. He has worked across many differing health care organizations, many of the medical specialties and with institutions, healthcare enterprises and regional health care systems throughout the USA and internationally.

3. Bulletin of the World Health Organization - Call for Papers

We encourage all IMIA members to consider developing submissions for this Call, and we ask that readers cascade the information to their colleagues and contacts.

Call for Papers: IMIA President Antoine Geissbuhler and Najeeb Al Shorbaji (WHO Department of Knowledge Management and Sharing) have published an Editorial and Call for Papers in the current (June 2011) edition of the Bulletin of the World Health Organization. Titled "Establishing an evidence base for e-health: a call for papers", the editorial is an open call for contributions to a Special Theme Issue of the Bulletin. The Editorial/Call can be found at http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/89/6/en/index.html (HTML version) or downloadable PDF file at http://www.who.int/bulletin/volumes/89/6/11-090274.pdf

This is part of a joint project between IMIA and, among others, a range of US government agencies (including PEPFAR, CDC, and USAID), IDRC, as well as the Global Health Informatics Partnership (GHIP). Author teams have been developed for a number of specific review papers and regionally-based papers are being developed through the work of IMIA's Regions. The objectives of the theme issue of the Bulletin are [1] to provide an authoritative, critical and independent overview of knowledge about the appropriate, transdisciplinary methods and applications in e-health; [2] to include contributors from developing countries who typically do not have the opportunity to publish in international journals; and [3] to disseminate the key findings of this theme issue to high-level decision-makers, to promote a stronger commitment on e-health interoperability issues and its wider application.

The deadline for submissions is 20 November 2011. Manuscripts should respect the Guidelines for contributors and mention this call for papers in a covering letter.
NOTE: All submissions will go through the Bulletin’s peer review process. Please submit to: http://submit.bwho.org

4. NI2012 Nursing Informatics Conference - Deadline for Submissions is 12 September
